Food Safety Supervisors

Under the Food Act, a Food Safety Supervisor is required if your business:

  • Prepares and sells ready-to-eat food.

  • Handles potentially hazardous food.

  • Sells food that is not in its original packaging.

Food businesses, like restaurants, cafés, takeaway shops, bakeries, clubs, school canteens, and caterers must have a Food Safety Supervisor. 

 

Your Responsibilities

If your business meets these conditions, you must: 

  • Appoint at least one Food Safety Supervisor for each food premises.

  • Ensure each location has its own Food Safety Supervisor if you own more than one food premises. A single Food Safety Supervisor cannot cover multiple food shops, temporary stalls, or mobile food vehicles.
 

Supervisor Requirements

Your Food Safety Supervisor must:

  1. Be able to supervise food handling staff and ensure safe practices.

  1. Be regularly present at the business.

  1. Hold a valid Food Safety Supervisor Certificate from an approved Registered Training Organisation. The certificate is valid for five years and must be renewed before it expires.

If your Food Safety Supervisor leaves, you must appoint a new one within 30 working days.
