Situated on the traditional lands of the Bidjigal people of the Eora Nation, Georges River LGA acknowledges its rich Indigenous history.The Georges River LGA has a land area of 38.85km2 The Georges River a source of sustenance and cultural significance for over 60,000 years and continues to be a vital landmark of Sydney. 

The region is well connected with eleven rail stations across two lines and bus routes providing exceptional accessibility. This well-connected hub sees significant daily movement of residents and workers, with roughly 70,000 people utilising Hurstville and Kogarah train stations alone. 

The region holds a strategic location just 17kms South of the Sydney CBD, close to Sydney Airport and is the gateway to the Sydney South towards Sutherland, Wollongong, Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

Its streetscapes reflect its multicultural character amidst heritage-listed art-deco facades and historic buildings. The Westfield shopping centre, a popular local meeting place and shopping destination, sits at the western end of the high street and plaza.

The Hurstville Place Strategy has been developed to provide a vision, priority projects and key actions to achieve the goal of Hurstville becoming the 'heart of the city'. The strategy outlines key projects that will transform Hurstville through innovative, economic, cultural and infrastructure improvement projects. 

The Strategy has identified twelve key priority projects for the Hurstville CBD area:

  • A connected walkable centre.
  • Create a green and open Hurstville.
  • A transformed civic precinct.
  • Expressions of culture.

  • Enabling place making and activation to create a vibrant and safe Hurstville.
