Protecting Our Waterways and Wetlands
Georges River Council works with seven neighbouring councils through Georges Riverkeeper to help protect and improve the Georges River estuary. This partnership supports a coordinated approach to managing the river and planning for its future.
The Georges River Coastal Zone Management Plan helps us to:
-
Support sustainable growth and use of resources.
-
Work closely with councils, government agencies and the community.
-
Gain community support and acceptance on managing the estuary.
-
Improve public access to the river and surrounding areas.
-
Obtain funding to carry out works.
-
Identify and prioritise key management actions.
-
Protect important habitats, natural features and heritage sites.
-
Restore and improve degraded areas.
Foreshore Access and Improvement Plan
The Georges River Foreshore Access and Improvement Plan
looks at the environmental and social condition of foreshore areas across the Georges River Council area.
The plan helps guide the management of public land along the river. It focuses on protecting environmental health, supporting healthy ecosystems, and improving community access and enjoyment of foreshore areas.
River Health
The Georges Riverkeeper River Health Monitoring Program collects environmental data to monitor the health of the river and support informed decision-making.
Water quality results are published in the The State of the Georges River 2020 Report.
The report provides an annual river health rating and identifies key threats to water quality. It also outlines actions taken by councils and Georges Riverkeeper to protect and improve the health of the river.
