To protect local natural assets, we are working in partnership with seven other Councils on the Georges Riverkeeper to ensure we have a clear direction on the future of the Georges River estuary.
The Georges River Coastal Zone Management Plan will allow us to:
- Accommodate sustainable population growth and resource utilisation
- Enhance cooperation between councils, agencies and stakeholders
- Gain community support and acceptance on managing the estuary
- Improve public access and amenity
- Obtain funding to carry out works
- Prioritise what needs to be done to better manage the estuary
- Protect important coastal habitats, features and heritage items
- Rehabilitate degraded areas.
Foreshore Access and Improvement Plan
The Georges River Foreshore Access and Improvement Plan investigates the environmental and social condition of foreshore areas along the Georges River within the Georges River Council local government area.
The primary purpose of this document is to identify management practices for areas of public land along the Georges River foreshore associated with environmental health, ecological resilience, and community access, use and enjoyment.
River Health
The Georges Riverkeeper’s River Health Monitoring Program collects environmental data to guide waterway management and inform the community and member Councils about the condition of the Georges River.
The latest results of the water quality monitoring are published in The State of the Georges River 2020 Report. The Report provides a qualitative river health rating each year (such as good, poor, etc) and it also outlines the key threats to water quality, management actions undertaken by councils in the catchment, and outlines the work delivered by the Georges Riverkeeper on behalf of member councils to enhance the health of the river.
