Next Steps After Hurstville School Precinct Traffic Study

02/04/2025

Georges River Council acknowledged the outcomes of the Hurstville School Precinct Traffic Study at its Meeting on Monday 24 March.

The purpose of the Traffic Study was to provide an updated list of road safety recommendations for the Precinct based on a previous 2017 independent traffic study. It also included implemented recommendations to date, stakeholder feedback during consultation, and site visit observations.

The recommendations were driven by key strategies and visions including Council’s 2050 target toward Vision Zero and improving safety in the area and to enhance perception of safety in the area.

The NSW Government has set an aspirational target of zero trauma on the transport network by 2050. It's committed to improving road safety and reducing lives lost and serious injuries through a range of initiatives.

The Precinct is located within the Georges River Council and directly adjacent to Bayside Council (toward the east) and is composed of six schools:

  • Hurstville Public School

  • Hurstville Adventist School

  • Georges River College – Hurstville Campus

  • St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic School

  • Bethany College; and

  • Sydney Technical High School.

Council engaged traffic consultants WSP to prepare and provide an updated Traffic Study as an ongoing commitment to the safety of the Precinct. It was finalised in November 2024, with the recommendations categorised into six priority areas, with a total of 34 identified safety issues.

Development of the 45 recommendations were considered with Georges River Council’s Transport Strategy Report as well as previous findings from the 2017 report.

Georges River Council, Bayside Council and Transport for NSW have already started working together to progress the recommendations provided in the report. The parties, including a representative from the schools, will now form a technical working group for the purpose of ensuring action.

Council is aware Transport for NSW is exploring the feasibility of a pedestrian bridge along Forest Road Hurstville and will be a stakeholder in this work as required. This recommendation was highlighted on numerous occasions by the participants of the study.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “By acting on the recommendations of the traffic study in the Precinct, we are taking steps to improve road safety and create a safer environment for students, families, and all road users.

“Council has already made strong progress in addressing traffic and safety concerns in the Precinct, and we are committed to working closely with schools, parents, and key stakeholders to implement practical solutions that enhance safety for our youngest community members.”

Since the 2017 study, Council adopted and implemented some of the recommendations while some are in consultation with key stakeholders including Transport for NSW, Bayside Council, and each of the schools.

The upgrades implemented to date since the study include speed zone reduction, wayfinding, signage, and linemarking, as well as modified intersections with signalling, operations, and kerb alignment.

Future reports will be provided to the Local Traffic Advisory Committee to progress recommendations.
