Georges River Council acknowledges Mardi Gras Festival

14/02/2025

Georges River Council is proud to acknowledge the 2025 Mardi Gras Festival as an important celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Running from Friday 14 February to Sunday 2 March 2025, Council recognises Mardi Gras not only as a vibrant celebration, but also as a symbol of social justice and ongoing commitment to equality and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

While the City of Sydney Council hosts a globally recognised and extensive Mardi Gras program, Georges River Council is excited to support this celebration with a satellite event at the Hurstville Museum & Gallery.

Georges River Council continues to prioritise the values of respect, connection, and equity for everyone. Council’s Social Justice Charter highlights our commitment to eliminating discrimination and creating a safe, inclusive environment for all.

As part of Council’s ongoing efforts, the LGBTQIA+ community is an identified vulnerable group within our Charter, alongside other groups such as culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Council’s initiatives such as Pride Month, Harmony Week, National Reconciliation Week, Youth Week, Seniors’ Week, and International Day of People with Disabilities help ensure that all members of our community have access to a wide range of programs and events that celebrate diversity and promote social change.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Georges River is a diverse community, and we are committed to ensuring every resident feels a true sense of belonging."

"Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where everyone, regardless of their background or identity, feels safe and valued."

"I wish all members of the Georges River community who celebrate a happy and joyous Mardi Gras 2025," the Mayor added.

Council is also a member of the Welcome Here Project, an initiative supporting organisations and businesses across Australia to create visible and inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ communities. We encourage all local businesses and organisations to join the project by registering on the Welcome Here website.

Looking ahead, Council is excited to celebrate Pride Month in June 2025 and will continue to work alongside local organisations to drive social justice and inclusion in every aspect of life in the Georges River area.
