Georges River Council Holds First Ordinary Meeting with Smoking Ceremony

06/12/2024

Georges River Council marked the start of its first ordinary Council meeting with a significant cultural ceremony that set a tone of unity, respect, and renewal on Monday, 25 November 2024.

The meeting began with a smoking ceremony conducted by Uncle Dean Kelly in front of the Civic Centre. Uncle Dean is a Yuin and Wailwan man who is a respected Traditional Knowledge Holder in the local community. Aunty Barb Simms, who is a Bidjigal Traditional Owner, then delivered a heartfelt Welcome to Country inside the chambers to officially open the new Council’s term.

The smoking ceremony is a traditional practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures which is undertaken by an Elder with specialised knowledge. It involves the burning of particular local native plant to create smouldering smoke for a number of different purposes such as cleansing, healing, connection and renewal.

Mayor Elise Borg highlighted the importance of incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practices into Council proceedings.

“At Georges River Council, we began this term with a smoking ceremony to show our respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and our commitment to working together with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” she said.

“This ceremony reminds us of the strong connection between culture, community, and the environment.

“By embracing this tradition, the Council is showing its dedication to celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritages, building a united community, and creating a future based on respect and understanding.”

The ceremony highlights Georges River Council’s ongoing commitment to celebrating and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritages, while promoting a united and harmonious community.
