Celebrate our diversity in Harmony Week 2025

10/03/2025

Georges River Council is inviting the community to celebrate local diversity by participating in Harmony Week activities during 18-24 March 2025.

Highlighting the theme ‘Everybody Belongs’, Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians inclusive of cultural or linguistic background.

As part of the Week, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will be observed on 21 March 2025.

Diversity is highly valued in the Georges River community with 99 different nationalities represented and 45 percent of residents born overseas.

With Georges River’s increasing diversity, there is a greater need to ensure members of the community feel they belong and are accepted in the community, while also being able to access the support services they need.

Georges River Council’s Social Justice Charter highlights the commitment to eliminating discrimination and creating a safe, inclusive environment for all. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are an identified vulnerable group within the Charter, alongside other groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the LGBTQIA+ community, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Georges River Council will continue to work alongside local organisations to drive social justice and inclusion in every aspect of life in the Georges River area.

Georges River Council Mayor, Elise Borg, said, “Harmony Week is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the rich diversity that makes Georges River such a vibrant and inclusive place.

“We are proud to promote inclusivity, respect, and cultural understanding as part of our Social Justice Charter. Harmony Week is a time to recognise the valuable contributions of our multicultural community and to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that everyone feels safe, valued, and connected.”
