Mayoral Column - Recognition of Business Chamber South’s Achievements - Small Business Month

02/12/2024

I would like to recognise the extraordinary efforts and achievements of Business Chamber South. The Business Chamber South team has proactively led networking events, workshops, and initiatives to connect, inform, and empower local businesses and community members in Georges River and beyond.

In the last ABS report, we have seen an 8.9 percent increase of small business entries in Georges River and small business supports 98 percent of local employment in the private sector. This demonstrates that small local businesses support our community by providing jobs and services back into our community.

Business Chamber South have been involved in different committees including Council’s Economic Leadership Group to act as a bridge between businesses and Council. They play a vital role in our community by serving as a unifying voice for our local business community and advocating for their needs.

In particular, I wish to acknowledge Business Chamber South’s efforts in delivering a series of events for Small Business Month.

Some highlights from October include:

  • Super Tuesday, held on 22 October, was a standout event, featuring major activities such as Girls on Fleek hosted at Humphrey’s Hotel where local businesses engaged in networking, training, and knowledge-sharing.

  • The Spark Sydney South Event at Hurstville Library. In collaboration with Spark Festival, Georges River Council, and Investment NSW, Business Chamber South hosted this insightful event featuring Adrian Tyson from Neuranext, who spoke on the impact of AI and robotics. Attendees gained valuable insights on integrating technology to streamline and help adapt their businesses with new technology. Spark Sydney South continued to build on the momentum from Spark Sydney South and the Jobs and Skills Expo.

  • And Mental Health Initiatives with “Know Your Limits” campaign and “Transform Hope Thru Action Planning” sessions, promoting mental health awareness in the workplace. These initiatives emphasise the importance of mental well-being as a core part of business sustainability.

Under the leadership of President Tony Baddour, Business Chamber South has experienced significant growth and continues to advocate for collaboration with surrounding LGAs including Bayside and Sutherland Councils. Georges River Council is a proud gold sponsor and recognises the importance of this strategic partnership in driving local business and community-led initiatives.
