Harmony Week StoryShare: Chinese Australian Creatives (Council Led Event)

21/03/2025 - Hurstville Library

For Harmony Week, join three artists from our Chinese-Australian community who will share their stories of migration, connection, and acceptance in Australia’s creative industries.

Join artist Guan Wei, singer Jing Lei, and poet Shaun Xiaochun Liang in a panel discussion with Rosie Rong Zhao from St George Toastmasters Club to hear their unique stories and celebrate the importance of art in their lives.

This special presentation will include a projection of artworks, live opera singing, and spoken poetry.

This event is suitable for ages 16 years and over.

About Harmony Week:
Harmony Week brings communities together by celebrating the cultural diversity of Australians. Join us on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March to recognise how our differences and similarities make Australia a great place to live where everyone belongs!

About StoryShare:
StoryShare offers engaging talks sharing the skills, journeys, and interests of inspiring creators and personalities from the local community. Inspire your world and share their story.

About the Speakers:
Panel Moderater Rosie Rong Zhao is a public speaker from the St Georges Toastmasters Club.

Artist Guan Wei
Guan Wei is an iconic figure in the Australian contemporary art scene and critically acclaimed internationally. He has held over 81 solo exhibitions in Australia and internationally, including Japan, Cuba, South Korea and China. In 2024, Vivid Sydney commissioned Guan Wei’s video work “Sea, Sand and Stars” projection for the MCA building facades. Guan Wei has had a special connection with Georges River since he featured in a group exhibition, "Our Journeys/Our Stories," at Hurstville Museum and Gallery in 2022. The exhibition featured a painting that he created in response to stories about early Chinese migrants in the area.

Singer Jing Lei
Jing Lei is a talented singer who has had a love-hate relationship with music. Born into a family from a professional stage background, Jing travelled to Australia seeking adventure and an escape from family obligations. A twist of fate had her settling in Australia, abandoning her music, and becoming a chartered accountant before eventually rediscovering her passion for singing. Jing has won a number of singing competitions and featured on television, including achieving the Global 2nd Award in the 2023 Cultures of China: Water Cube Cup Song Contest Organized by Beijing TV and Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, 2nd Place in China’s equivalent to Australian Idol 2010 TVB National Karaoke Challenge televised on SBS); and Channel 7’s 2018 program All Together Now.

Poet Shaun Xiaochun Liang
Shaun is an author and poet, and president of the Sydney Yuxuan Poetry Association. He is a long-term resident of Kogarah and his migration story features in the first book of the Australia Chinese New Arts Society Too Blue to be True collection, currently available at Georges River Libraries.
