Georges River welcomes new Mayor and Deputy Mayor

16/10/2024

Councillor Elise Borg has been elected as Mayor of Georges River Council and Councillor Nancy Liu has been elected as Deputy Mayor at the Extraordinary Meeting of Council held on Monday 14 October 2024.

This is the first time Georges River Council has elected a female Mayor, and both female Mayor and Deputy. Serving as the previous Deputy Mayor, this is Councillor Borg’s first appointment as Mayor.

This comes after the 2024 Local Government Elections on Saturday 14 September where the Georges River community elected 15 Councillors for a four-year term, shaping the future of our area.

Councillor Borg will serve her first term as Georges River Council Mayor, having first been elected to Council in 2021.

In accepting her election to the role of Mayor, Councillor Borg spoke to the Council, and community in the public gallery.

“Thank you to my colleagues for your trust and support for this great honour to lead Georges River Council; I’m very humbled,” she said.

“I appreciate the huge responsibility that this role entails, and I promise I will strive to lead a cohesive and collaborative council that puts our residents first in all our decision-making.

“I welcome our new and returning councillors and look forward to working with each and every one of you to deliver the best outcomes for our Georges River community.

“We have a fantastic leadership team here at Georges River led by our General Manager David Tuxford, who will guide us on our decision making and I look forward to working with you all.”

Councillor Borg also congratulated Councillor Nancy Liu on becoming Deputy Mayor.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to Councillor Nancy Liu on being elected as Deputy Mayor of Georges River Council.

“I look forward to collaborating closely with Councillor Liu as we embark on this exciting new chapter for our council and our community," she said.

During the meeting, Council also appointed councillors to each of the Standing Committees for the new term:

  • Assets and Infrastructure Committee. Chair: Councillor Ashvini Ambihaipahar.
  • Community and Culture Committee. Chair: Councillor Kathryn Landsberry.
  • Environment and Planning Committee. Chair: Councillor Peter Mahoney.
  • Finance and Governance Committee. Chair: Councillor Christina Jamieson.
