Art in the Afternoon - Watercolour painting with Eleni Karathanasi (Council Led Event)

11/08/2024 - Hurstville Museum & Gallery.

In this workshop, you will assume the role of a storyteller, experimenting with watercolours and exploring different items and the stories they can tell. We will be painting and discussing items found in the 1X4 exhibition, and items from your own past. You may bring an item of your choice to paint and share its story with others. This class is great for beginners or people wanting to loosen up their approach to painting.

Experience mindful approaches to art-making and try new techniques and mediums as you express yourself and enhance your wellbeing. Find your voice while you cultivate creativity. These sessions are ideal for participants seeking to connect with themselves, their creativity and community. Each session will focus on different themes and mediums.

Suitable for adults aged (ages 16+). No previous experience required, all welcome. All materials provided. Participants are encouraged to source materials for their unique creations if desired.

1X4 exhibition:
Museums use objects to tell stories. It sounds simple but it’s complicated. Objects can tell multiple stories from many points of view. So, who chooses the story? Which story is the truth? In museums, curators choose an interpretation but 1X4 turns this upside down. Each object in this exhibition tells four distinct stories. You can listen to or read each of the four stories, or some, or none and just enjoy the beauty of the objects. Every story is the truth about the object and is a valid way to view the object, but they are all different.

1X4 is an innovative, collection-rich, social history exhibition exploring the multiplicity of narratives each object can tell, drawn from Newcastle Museum’s collections and supplemented with objects from Hurstville Museum & Gallery’s collection.
