Closure of Oatley Bay Memorial Boardwalk

Public Notices 17/05/2024

The Oatley Bay Memorial Boardwalk has been closed to ensure the safety of the public.

The elevated wooden boardwalk spans approximately 50 metres along the northern foreshore of Oatley Bay between Morshead Drive and Spalding Crescent. It is part of a longer trail linking Neverfail Bay foreshore with Poulton Park mangroves.

An external consultant assessed the boardwalks condition. The consultant identified that the boardwalk was in poor condition and that further detailed investigations should be undertaken to assess its structural integrity.

A structural engineer was engaged in April 2024 to undertake a structural assessment of the boardwalk. The assessment found that the structural integrity of the boardwalk has been compromised due to extensive rotting of the timber. They recommended that the boardwalk should be closed immediately and demolished. This was to ensure the safety of the public.

Following the structural assessment, Council officers arranged for the closure of the boardwalk. Council officers are looking for bids from qualified contractors to demolish the structure.

The design of a new boardwalk at this location has been included in the proposed 2024/25 Accessway Renewals and Refurbishments Program. The design process will include:

  • Community consultation.
  • Consideration of the boardwalks’ history and existing plaques.
  • Appropriate geotechnical and structural engineering.

Construction of the new boardwalk is expected to start in the 2025/26 financial year. This will be after the detailed design is completed.

Signs are currently being developed and will be installed in the area. This is to inform the community of the boardwalks’ closure and the intent for the construction of a new boardwalk in the future.
