Mayoral Column - Council Moves to Improve Community Use of Sports Grounds

31/10/2025

I’m proud that Georges River is home to sporting champions and a community that loves getting active. From children kicking their first football in local clubs, to school teams, weekend netball squads, and seniors enjoying a friendly game, our fields help keep our community healthy, active and connected.

We’re fortunate to have outstanding facilities like Jubilee Stadium, Penshurst Park Sporting Hub, and the Peakhurst and Poulton Synthetic Fields. And now, we’re making it easier for everyone to enjoy them.

Council has introduced a new Sports Ground Access Policy and a revised Grants and Donations Policy. These policies improve community access to Council sports grounds and facilities, with clear, consistent and fair rules for allocation and use.

The updated Grants and Donations Policy now makes all hireable, non-contracted facilities eligible for event and venue hire grants. This opens the door for more local clubs and community groups to use the iconic Jubilee Stadium and our Tier 1 sports grounds, including Hurstville Oval, Harold Fraser Oval, and Olds Park Field 1 and Tier 2 sports grounds, which include all synthetic fields.

The policy also provides access to function spaces at key venues, such as Jubilee Stadium and Booth Saunders Pavilion.

Developed in collaboration with Council's Sports Advisory Committee, the Sports Ground Access Policy ensures our fields are allocated in a fair, equitable, and transparent way. It also introduces a consistent approach to ground closures, so teams can plan with confidence and avoid last-minute surprises.

These changes are part of Council’s Action Plan for an Active Georges River—a commitment to supporting people of all ages and abilities to get active, stay healthy, and enjoy everything our sports grounds have to offer.
