Graffiti is the illegal writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public or private space. Defacing public or private property is a crime and can negatively impact our community.
To address this, Council’s City Maintenance team remove graffiti tags and maintain a register of vandalism to record repeat offences. There is also advice for residents and business owners on how to best tackle graffiti on the NSW Government website.
Eliminating graffiti through street art
Street Art, is the expression of legal artwork in the public space, sanctioned by the appropriate authority such as Local Government.
Georges River Council uses public art to reduce incidences of graffiti. Quality pieces of wall art are proven to reduce graffiti vandalism and anti-social behaviour in the area. The image below is an example of street art which has been installed in the area.
